This spring, the University of Maine at Augusta is hosting its 2016 Juried Student Architecture Show featuring the work of architecture students in the Bachelor of Architecture Program.
The student projects include design ideas across a broad spectrum of scales and contexts, as well as collaborative community projects, precedent studies, analysis of existing buildings, and thesis investigations.
The show is juried by practicing architects: Judy Johnson, Michelle Phelps, and Graham Vickers. Judy Johnson is a principal at Harriman Architects and Engineers as well as the past president of AIA Maine. She knew she wanted to be an architect since the age of ten and has headed up a wide variety of projects from schools to medical facilities to office buildings. She also serves on the board of the non-profit organization, Spiral Arts, which supports the making of art by those with mental, physical or economic challenges. Michelle Phelps is an accomplished designer with over twenty years’ experience in custom residential & commercial architecture with several notable recent publications in Maine Home and Design. Having studied and worked in Boston and Maine, Michelle began Phelps Architects, Inc. in partnership with her husband Dan Phelps in 2012. They are located in Damariscotta, the town where Michelle grew up.Graham Vickers is an architect at SMRT Architects and for the last two years, has been serving on the board of the Portland Society of Architects. At SMRT, he has been working predominately on Government, High Tech Industrial and Healthcare projects and has been responsible for facilitation of architectural and engineering production from pre-design through construction administration.
The exhibition is a chance for students from UMA’s Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) degree to showcase their studio, analysis, and technology work. The B.Arch program is the only five-year professional architecture degree program in Maine, and provides students with a path towards architectural licensure.
