Cuba Comes to Central Maine in Danforth Gallery Exhibit at UMA

 

UMA's Danforth Gallery has opened its fall 2014 season with CUBA: Cultural Understanding Between the Arts, the exhibit showcases the work of 14 UMA students from September 2nd to October 3rd at the Charles Danforth Gallery. An opening reception will be held at 4:30pm on September 19th immediately following the university's convocation ceremony.

The artwork of each artist, which includes photography, painting, mixed media, up-cycled media, and student-published travel books, was developed during a 9-credit integrated course using Cuba as a case study to integrate art, history, literature, and culture. The course included a ten-day immersion in Havana, Trinidad and Cienfuegos.

The artwork displays the connections students have found with the Cuban people and their culture during the course. The exhibition features an artistic recreation of one of the oldest public squares in Havana displaying images of granite paving stones, some of which came from the quarries of Maine in the 19th century. Other students’ works explore Cuban music, urban culture, faces of Cuban people, and the social changes of Cuba today.

The Danforth Gallery is located in Jewett Hall.  Gallery hours are Monday - Wednesday 9:00am - 5:00 pm, Thursdays and Fridays 9:00am - 1:00pm.
