Ian Trask, Young Belichick, Film slide collage

Point of View: Ian Trask's Strange Histories
January 20 - February 24, 2022

Ian Trask is a Brunswick, Maine-based artist whose practice often transforms the stuff of everyday life into poetic visual inquiries into the workaday materials and assumptions of daily life in America.

In 2012, Artist Ian Trask was gifted a trove of film slides from the art-pop family band, the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. Suddenly in possession of thousands of film slides, Trask began layering the images frozen in gemlike color film, producing photocollages that are by turns poignant, funny, disorienting, and joyful. For his 2018 book Strange Histories: A Bizarre Collaboration, Trask invited his community to respond to these collages in writing, creating a dialogue between word and image that his exhibition at UMA continues.

A curated selection of Ian Trask's Strange Histories collages will exist, in the Danforth Gallery, in dialogue with responsive writings from UMA's community, inviting viewers to become writers, to become narrators of newly invented, even strange, histories.
